“The word theatre comes from the Greeks. It means the seeing place.
It is the place people come to see the truth about life and the social situation.”
~Stella Adler

Join socially engaged artist and educator Carol Cabrera for a workshop exploring your own identity, your place in the social world that we live in and your capacity to imagine a new, different, magical, better world. This 10 week workshop will include an introduction to playwriting, explorations of issues that we are interested in, time to create your writing, and space for us to come together as a collective to celebrate and critique that writing. The workshop will conclude in a public reading of the work created by professional actors from the San Diego community.

Week 1: Who am I? What is my identity? What stories do I bring to the table?

Week 2: Where do I exist in the world? Where is my place? What social issues do I see that need attention? What do I see in the world that could be re-imagined? What do I see in the world that needs critique, conversation and dialogue?

Week 3: What is possible in the world? How can I imagine new possibilities? How can I imagine alternate places, people and situations? How can I create a story that speaks with the world? In Class Writing Time and 1 on 1 meetings with Carol

Week 4: Collective Critique Workshop

Week 5: Collective Critique Workshop

Week 6: How do people receive my work? What did I write that worked? What did I write that didn’t come out the way I imagined it to? How can I make my work better? How does my writing change when people are playing the characters?

Week 7: How is my work in dialogue with the world around me? How can allow the audience to speak back to the work?

Week 8: In Class Writing Time and 1 on 1 meetings with Carol

Week 9: Final plays (for now!) due for print, Celebration of Work, Final Collective Critique, Look at headshots/resumes of actors and choose actors for each of our pieces
